Organization Arts Letters and Numbers

Website http://www.artslettersandnumbers.com/programs/residency

Country United States

Location Averill Park, NY

Opportunity Type Residency / Artist Colony

Opportunity Discipline All Disciplines

Application Deadline 03/31/2016

Description

The Spring Residency at Arts Letters and Numbers is a space for individuals to have full creative agency to develop new works in a peaceful and evocative environment and to have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with other artists. We accept residency requests from 1 week to 6 week periods, starting April 1st. The fee for 2015/2016, covering accommodation and access to the facilities, starts at $175 per week. Many artists who have come here have found that crucial to the making of new works comes the need to discuss it, the ideas around it, to receive response to it, to share the influences of it, and this has been exciting to facilitate what seems to be an organic development of the programming of the place as it becomes necessary. The important distinction here is that none of it is required, it has all emerged out of the creative necessity and desire of the work itself! We have had critiques, discussions, solo exhibitions, group exhibitions and performances, film screenings, group drawing sessions, conversations over dinner and the spontaneous conversations throughout the days. It is important to recognize the role the local community has played in the creative life of the work. More than being audience to the works, they have been actors/actresses, critics and hosts, lending an unexpected but essential dimension to the development of works and the discourse around it. It continues to be a good year for making here at Arts Letters and Numbers and we look forward to more adventures. AVAILABLE WEEKLY HAPPENINGS Monday Evening: T-time, serious casual discussion, linkage making, mounting of enquiries for critical reception and processing with other minds, development of discourse, emergent language to signify thoughts and works and ways of thinking through work, relating experience to abstraction and larger contexts. Tuesday Evening Table Tennis gathering: dinner and ping pong at various houses in the local community. Thursday Evening Night Drawing: a site to bring ongoing thoughts through another medium for distillation and focus, developing thought peripherally, a time given to sharing and seeing works in progress, it is a framework for cultivating creative interaction with multiple available mediums of expression, it is a collective working session. Friday Evening Film Screening: sharing of completed works, performing, sharing of influences and references, open studio time after the film. Other available happenings: Excursions to Museums, Exhibitions, Performances, Workshops, Construction, Hikes, Dinners (Organized and hosted by Fellows and Resident Artists) DURATION OF RESIDENCY Residencies may be from 1 week to 6 weeks. All applications are reviewed on a case by case basis. DISCIPLINES SUPPORT AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION The basis for Arts Letters and Numbers Residency Program is to encourage cross disciplinary linkages. We welcome artists and thinkers from all disciplines to develop their work at our facilities. Facilities include a wood working and metalworking shop (unheated), pottery wheel, private and shared studio spaces, easels, desks, use of the large mill space 100ft by 60ft (unheated) for staging and set work for photography, film making, dance and large scale installations. There are two pianos, one 9' concert grand and an upright, a drumset and guitars. There are also spaces for more private, quiet and intimate focused work. ACCOMMODATION Shared accommodations sleeps 2 to 3 people $175 Private rooms $275 There are three shared bathrooms in the house. The kitchen and fridge are shared. There is a large industrial 6 burner stove for use by all residents. Although residents are responsible for their own meals, it is often the case that dinners are an opportunity for everyone to gather and share that meal. STUDIO/WORKSPACE Because each artist's studio needs and space differs, we work with each artist to find the best possible working situation for their time. EXPECTATIONS TOWARDS THE ARTIST Artists are expected to pursue their individual creative endeavor and many times this calls for leading a workshop, giving a lecture, sharing a film, partake in critique, etc. These are optional but has proven to be an integral tool for artists to find inspiration and to allow others to experience the works in progress or previous works. APPLICATION INFORMATION Apply at http://www.artslettersandnumbers.com/programs/residency Work samples are required for evaluating applications. The application form asks for a website but if you do not maintain one as the site for samples of your work, please send samples, writing or images directly to info@artslettersandnumbers.com SELECTION PROCESS Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis by Fellows in Residence, Frida Foberg and Che Perez.
